Originating in Germany in the 1600′s, the first tinsel was actually made from a paper thin silver alloy, cut into strips and hung on the Christmas tree.  Even with the tinsel that is sold in stores today, putting the individual little strips on the tree is hard and even harder to get it all off which is why a lot of people have probably stopped adding the shiny stuff to their Christmas trees.  It may make the tree sparkle but it’s still a mess.
